Zed vs. VS Code: Why I’m Not Ready to Switch Just Yet
There’s lots of buzz surrounding Zed. The new, fast, powerful editor is touted to give VS Code a run for its money.
Developed in Rust, a speedy, efficient, and widely loved programming language, Zed was initially released in 2023 and subsequently open-sourced in early 2024.
When you install Zed, you will immediately notice that it is swift. Projects open in the blink of an eye. But then, this is before you have installed any extensions or add-ons.
Most VS Code shortcuts work in Zed too. The interface is minimalist but from a distance, it resembles VS Code. This ought to simplify the transition, right?
Unfortunately, Zed isn’t available to the Majority of software developers yet. When it was first released it was only available on macOS. It is now officially available on Linux. However, it still isn’t available on Windows.
Recent stack overflow survey results show that Windows is the most used operating system among software developers. So it’s kind of strange that Zed isn’t officially released to this user group yet.
Another big feature of Zed is code collaboration. How do you collaborate with other developers when they can't install it on their system?
