Whether you are in IT or just a Hobbyist. Having your own server at home can be fun, plus you get to learn a lot deploying software and administering the server.

Rack servers can be expensive, but if you have an old laptop lying around or can easily get hold of one, then you are good to go. Laptops are ideal for a home lab and not for production purposes.

What can you run on a laptop server?

You can install a Linux server such as Ubuntu server and use container technologies such as Docker, Podman or LXD.

Alternatively, you can run a Type 1 hypervisor such as Proxmox and run several server operating systems on It.

Here are some of the benefits of using a laptop as a server.

1. Redundant power

Laptops come with a battery which is ideal as a redundant source of power in the case of a power outage. On rack servers you need to have a UPS or something similar to achieve this.

Normally a laptop battery can hold out for at least three hours before it drains out. Giving you enough time for a graceful shutdown if you need to.
