Introduction

A few years ago, I was given a take-home coding project as part of the interview process. This was the first time I encountered a take-home coding challenge; I wish I knew what I am about to share with you, here, back then.

I must admit that my first encounter with a take-home coding challenge was disastrous at the very least. I was devastated and disappointed but I learnt a lot from the feedback I got and the whole experience.

In this article I will share some tips from my own personal experience so that you too can shine in your next take-home coding project.

About the project

Take-home coding projects are not a rare occurrence in software engineering interviews. Do not be intimidated by them. On the contrary, this is your opportunity to shine. You have all it takes to deliver quality code.

Planning

As you tackle your challenge keep these 3 key steps in mind;

  • Make it work
  • Make it better or pretty and
  • Finally make it faster
